Temple Emanuel Director of Education and Community Engagement

Temple Emanuel (TE) is looking for a Director of Education and Community Engagement (DECE) who will enhance our learning community through innovative, interactive, age-diverse programming who recognizes the importance of relationship building among members of our congregation.

The primary responsibilities of this position are:

  • Involving members in meaningful Jewish experiences
  • Shaping and oversight of a dynamic Religious School and Youth Program
  • Representing Temple Emanuel in the St. Louis Jewish Community

Education Responsibilities

  1. The DECE is responsible for planning, organizing, administering and supervising the Religious School, Hebrew School and Youth Groups.
  2. Develops, implements and evaluates Religious School curriculum consistent with TE and Reform Judaism.
  3. Organizes and supervises youth programming for High Holidays.
  4. Designs and implements holiday programming during Religious School.
  5. Recruits, hires and supervises faculty and other Religious School staff.
  6. Recruits, hires and supervises Religious School volunteers.
  7. Creates the yearly Religious School calendar in conjunction with other TE staff.
  8. Creates family learning opportunities within and outside of the classroom.
  9. Oversees all aspects of Senior Youth Group (TEDY) and Junior Youth Group (JYG) including hiring Youth Advisors.
  10. Supervises a structured Madrichim
  11. Fosters organized, clear communication with staff, parents and students about Religious School.
  12. Develops and coordinates appropriate in-service learning and professional development opportunities for faculty.
  13. Manages the Religious School & Youth Programs budget.
  14. Creates and implements Confirmation Class Trip based on student and parent interest.
  15. Ensures proper policies and procedures are in place and followed for safety and security.

Engagement Responsibilities

  1. Within Temple Emanuel
    1. Coordinates a minimum of 4 Jewish themed events per year targeting at least one of the following populations: Seniors, Empty-Nesters, School-age Families, Young Families.
    2. Creates an implement innovative programing with conjunction with existing programs.
    3. Oversees and implement Mitzvah Makers projects.
  2. Louis Jewish Community
    1. Represents TE on the Education Directors Council
    2. Represents TE on the Youth Professionals Council
    3. Represents TE on 2 other community projects as agreed upon with supervisor. For example, the Community Yom Ha Atzmaut planning team.
    4. Creates innovative outreach programs within the community. For example, Heritage Project, Jewish children’s book reading at Barnes & Noble, etc.

General Responsibilities

  1. Prepares monthly articles for the Temple bulletin.
  2. Provides Youth Programs information for TE weekly eblast.
  3. Collaborates with other TE staff.
  4. Attends senior staff meetings.
  5. Participates in supervision.
  6. Attends promptly to concerns, email and inquiries.
  7. Attends all Religious School functions.

Education/Experience Qualifications:

  • Strong background in Reform Jewish education
  • Formal and informal teaching experience
  • Experience in Program Management or related leadership position
  • Demonstrated administrative experience
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Working knowledge of basic Hebrew
