Congregation Shaare Emeth seeks a Communications Director to oversee all congregational communications and further the successful fulfillment of the mission.

Position Summary:

The Communications Director will oversee all internal and external public relations, branding, marketing communications, digital signage, web management and social media for Congregation Shaare Emeth. Responsible for development of comprehensive marketing campaigns to publicize Congregation Shaare Emeth events, programs and initiatives.  This person will develop the execution of strategic social media and digital initiatives, as well as all print media and will be responsible for developing and working with a Communications committee to implement a comprehensive plan for the Congregation.  Responsible for defining goals for appropriate campaigns, analyzing their performance and updating methods as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in English, journalism, marketing, communications, public relations or other relevant field is required
  • Experience in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, Social Media and/or Informatics is required
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; strong presentation skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to give detailed attention to several concurrent projects
  • Self-motivated, diligent work ethic with high productivity level
  • Strong social media experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Powerpoint, Word,Excel) required
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) preferred
  • Graphic Design and Video Production experience is a PLUS
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to develop consensus

Essential Functions:

Knowledge of and promotion of Congregational Programming and Mission:

  • Maintain familiarity with and monitor all congregational programming, worship, education, social justice and other congregational activities and insure an integrated communications strategy.

Print Media:

  • Develop written print material for Congregation Shaare Emeth – including Temple Bulletin and all communications.  Will also be responsible for organizing a calendar for distribution of communications.
  • Work with graphic artists, printers, etc. to produce print materials.
  • Edit material submitted for Bulletin/Shaare Mail and website that others submit and develop effective proofreading processes.

Media Relations:

  • Serve as liaison between Congregation Shaare Emeth and the news media
  • Produce and distribute news releases and articles regarding congregational events and member achievements for Jewish and secular publications and media outlets.  Serve as the contact for all news media inquiries.
  • Develop a proactive media campaign leading to greater penetration in the community.
  • Obtain media coverage for identified events
  • Prepare and disseminate press releases, advertisements and media alerts

Social Media

  • Build and execute social media strategy through platform determination, messaging and audience identification.
  • Generate, edit, publish and share content (text, images, video or HTML) that builds meaningful connections and strengthens the congregation’s reputation. Moderate all user-generated content.
  • Maintain and supervise ongoing development of congregational website in coordination with clergy, directors, staff and lay leadership
  • Develop and promote the congregation through email using such media as Constant Contact (ShaareMail)
  • Create policies for submission for all media communications
  • Create and coordinate staff social media training and submission policies. 
  • Plan and execute/outsource video projects as desired for web posting and programs.
  • Responsible for regular online posts using such resources as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Work with ambassadors from each department on posting in social media

Website Management

  • Responsible for all updates to website
  • Add temple events to website calendar

Email news and marketing

  • Responsible for creating and sending weekly congregation email
  • Maintains e-blasts calendar
  • Designs and sends emails as necessary

Digital Signage

  • Updates boards on a weekly basis
  • Manages creative presentations for interactive signage


  • Manage congregational photo files and press archives
  • Insure that photo documentation takes place for all events
  • Work with a marketing committee on branding for Congregation Shaare Emeth
  • Serve as a member of the Directors team at Shaare Emeth and participate in staff meetings, events and programs as deemed appropriate
  • Manage and work within communications budget of the congregation

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • While performing the duties described above, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for long periods of time. 
  • Communication Director may be required to use a computer for extended periods of time, resulting in frequent and repetitive hand/arm movement.
  • Hours may include some evenings and weekends per the Director’s instructions.
