Sarah Treem’s play opens with the first meeting of two evolutionary biologists: one an eminent scholar and professor, the other an anxious student with a radical thesis. They are connected by more than just their focus on the female reproductive system – a fertile subject. The play explores the bias toward the male perspective and offers public discourse through a scientific, woman-driven, multi-generational lens. But Treem’s passionate and clinical dialogue coaxes out a story so much deeper than the science. This is not a play about the female reproductive system at all. It is a play about the how and the why of life.
