James Redfield presents on Rabbis and Kitchen Magicians: Ancient Jewish “Superstition” in Context

March 4 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Free – $10

The rabbis of second- through fourth-century Roman Palestine are not known for their tolerance toward non-Jewish beliefs and practices. However, they were also very curious about these matters–at the very least, in order to prohibit them, but sometimes for other reasons as well. This talk will explore one area of their curiosity, in their laws of “superstition” or what they called “ways of the Amorite.” We will explore how the rabbis’ debates around these laws reflect a more nuanced interaction with their cultural environment–not only with their non-Jewish elite peers, but also with popular Jewish practices of other men and women (including their own mothers).
