Criminal Justice Reform Education Event

August 18, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 2:00 pm on day 18 of the month, repeating indefinitely

JCRC, along with our partners, Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice and the Peace and Justice Commission of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, invite you to participate in our Criminal Justice Reform Education Series. The inequities people of color suffer at the hands of the justice system constitutes of the most pressing civil rights crises in the United States. Missouri’s prisons are overcrowded and the choice today is to build more prisons, at tremendous expense, or change the way in which people are sentenced, rehabilitated and released. The voice of the Jewish Community, in coalition with others, can spur the reforms needed in Missouri.

Our first event is Sunday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. – a screening screening of the critically acclaimed documentary 13th explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation’s prisons are disproportionately filled with African Americans. After the screening, hear from Mary Fox, head of the St. Louis Public Defender’s Office, about what is happening in St. Louis and in Missouri. Time will be provided to ask questions and discuss the topics and themes of the film.
